The 4th quarter was the story of the game when PG county went to a full court press and outscored Montgomery County 26-6 , to come back and win by a score of 84-73.
OnSunday afternoon Voli Sports sponsored the first ever all star game that featured PG county all stars vs Montgomery county all stars. The game was played at Dr. Henry A Wise High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The school is located in PG county. 20 different schools were represented by the 22 players who participated in the game. The game was not like most all star games, as tough defense was on display for most of the game. The game was highlighted by plays at the end of the 3rd quarter and beginning of the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter was the story of the game when PG county went to a full court press and outscored Montgomery County 26-6 in the quarter to come back and win by a score of 84-73.
Montgomery county held a double digit lead for much of the game. They connected on 10 3-point field goals in the first 3 quarters and PG county was turning the ball over at an alarming rate. PG county turned the ball over 36 times in the 32 minute game. But when the game began to matter, PG turned up the intensity, stepped up on the defensive end, and began to demolish their counterparts, mainly in the transition game. The game’s high scorer was 6’4” guard Davon Morton of Friendly who scored 17 points to go along with 4 steals. Whitman forward Daniel Voigt and Gaithersburg forward Malcolm Miller led Montgomery county, each scoring 12. Voigt connected on 4 3-balls in the game.
After the 1st quarter Montgomery county led 25-19. By half time they had drawn the lead to double figures as they took a 50-40 lead into the locker rooms. After 3 quarters Montgomery led 67-58. With 3:43 remaining in the 4th PG came back to tie it up for the first time since the opening quarter. 14 seconds later Timmone Whatley’s (Douglass) bucket gave PG their first lead of the game, 71-70,a lead they would never relinquish. At the 3 minute mark Eleanor Roosevelt’s Prince Okoroh had the play of the game as he converted a 3 point play after an And-1 facial on an opponent. The 600 fans in attendance gave him a standing ovation. In the final 3 minutes PG would outscore Montgomery 10-2 to walk away with the double digit victory.
The game was highlighted by plays to end the 3rd quarter and open the 4th. With 3 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter Okoroh rose high above the rim to stuff an Andre Gaines (Quince Orchard) dunk attempt. Then to start off the 4th quarter Alexander Noble (Surrattsville) found Tion Barnes (Gwynn Park) for a 1 handed alley-oop. The game was a major success and can be watched on Voli Sports (channel 1 on Verizon Fios) on Wednesday night.
