On a night when most DC sports fans were cheering on boxer and hometown hero Lamont Peterson in his improbable upset over Amir Khan, two WCAC schools were hosting some very good high school basketball.

In the Gonzaga DC Classic the host Eagles trailed by 8 after the first quarter but used a 22-9 run to come back and put away Sagemont of Weston, Florida.  Nate Britt once again led Gonzaga in scoring with 19 points.  Center Will Rassman added 17.  Sagemont was led in scoring by Egor Koulechov for the second consecutive game.  In the second semi-final Neumann-Gorreti won again by double figures.  A day after trouncing McNamara by a score of 73-46 the Philadelphia school did a number on another DC area school in defeating Sidwell Friends by a score of 76-61.   Neumann-Gorreti was led by Ja’Quan Newton who scored 28, the most points scored by any player on the tournaments second day.  Jamal Lewis led Sidwell with 17 while Josh Hart added 16.

In the consolation games John Carroll defeated Central Catholic by a score of 67-41 and McNamara downed St. Rita of Cascia by a score of 65-59.
