With the 2012-13 high school basketball season right around the corner that means that NCAA hoops and the NBA are underway.

With that said it’s time to take a look at some former local DMVers who are shining at the highest level of D-1 basketball.

We all know how Indiana has just inked former Paul VI standout Stanford Robinson to join former DeMatha Stag Victor Oladipo on the country’s #1 team.  Rumor has it that Beejay Anya has Indiana on his list too.  Wouldn’t it be something if the three WCAC standouts all rocked Hoosier gear at the same time.

Right here at Georgetown there are a trio of underclassmen all getting solid minutes and contributing for the Hoyas. We’ve got Mikael Hopkins, Markel Starks, and 2010-2011 all-met player of the year Greg Whittington all averaging over 20 minutes per game.

Down at Duke we’ve got 2009-2010 All-Met Player of the year Quinn Cook from DeMatha along with former Gonzaga guard Tyler Thornton and former Montrose Christian standout Josh Hairston.

Up north in Syracuse Jerami Grant just got his first career minutes this past weekend out in San Diego in a game on an air craft carrier.  Grant’s older brother Jerian is a big east foe over at Notre Dame.

2011-12 All-Met player of the year Patrick Holloway just saw his first action the other day for George Mason.

Former DeMatha iron man James Robinson is getting some serious minutes for Pittsburgh and will certainly be an impact player this year.

University of Virginia has a pair of DMV legends in for Montrose Christian Mustang Justin Anderson, and the high flyer, Darion Atkins; each have drawn a start in the teams two games this year.

[George Washington has a ton of local talent that Head Coach Mike Lonergan kept at home.   Isaiah Armwood is back in the DMV after attending Villanova his freshman year.  He is joined in the starting lineup by point guard Joe McDonald, a Landon product.  Kevin Larsen of Montrose is also in the mix as is Episcopal graduate Kethan Savage.

Another Episcopal graduate, Arnaud William Adala Moto, got 19 minutes in his first game down at Wake Forest over the weekend.

But the most under the radar player from last year’s class in the DMV has to be Derrick Colter of Duquesne.  The former Largo Lion is averaging 33 minutes a game and is averaging 12 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds in two very close losses at Albany and at Georgetown.

Look for more info on former DMV high school players as the college season plays out.

And starting in about 10 days Capitol Hoops will be in full coverage mode bringing you highlights, interviews and articles from some of the top teams in all of the conferences across the DMV.
