Eleanor Roosevelt’s Defense Turns Up The Heat; Defeats Springbrook 56-46

12/28/2012

Springbrook High School had a magical three year run from 2008 to 2010 resulting in three consecutive 4A state championships.  If they want to get back to where they were, they need to tighten things up.

On Wednesday evening they had a great opportunity to go up against one of the best defensive teams in the state.  It’s games like these that Springbrook needs to concentrate on because their regular season schedule is, shall we say, fairly easy.  “The Brook” , who was coming off a solid win over Gwynn Park on Tuesday, committed numerous second half turnovers that led to easy transition points for the Raiders.  The Raiders coasted to a 10 point victory behind a balanced offense that saw seven players score between 5 and 12 points.

Springbrook’s leader in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots, three year starter Demetric Austin was plagued with foul trouble throughout the entire game and found himself on the bench quite often.  With 2 minutes and 30 seconds remaining he fouled out.  Without Austin, Springbrook’s multitude of guards kept the game close, in fact the score was back and forth for almost the duration. At about the 5 minute mark in the fourth quarter, Roosevelt made their move and began to pull away.  Springbrook Senior Charles Taylor, who transferred this year from national powerhouse Montrose Christian, showed off his athleticism Wednesday with 4 big time dunks, 3 of which were in the half court set.

Roosevelt improves to 6-2 with the win despite going 17-33 from the free throw line.  The Raiders front line is one of the biggest in the state.  It features Malachi Alexander and Enuoma Ebinum who each go about 6’7”.  They have both improved tremendously from last year and work well together both on the block and in the high-low game.  The Raiders feature an arsenal of different full court and half court pressure defensive schemes that seem to frazzle opponents on a nightly basis.

After the new year Roosevelt will travel to Northwestern on January 6th.  Springbrook will host Blair on January 3rd in their next contest.
