Paul VI Stays Hot — Completes Regular Season Sweep of O’Connell

Prior to the beginning of the 2014-15 high school basketball season expectations were very high for the Paul VI Panthers.  Despite losing a five man unit to transfer that could have competed with any team in the DMV, PVI still brought back a lot of talent.

But the Panthers had a rigorous national schedule they had to face and they didn’t fare to well against those teams.  Fast forward a couple weeks to the second half of their WCAC schedule and PVI has begun to blossom. The Fairfax school has won six of their last seven games, their only loss coming in that span, a 2-point overtime L to Gonzaga.

On Friday night PVI beat arch-rival O’Connell for the second time in nine days. They put together a dynamite defensive effort. O’Connell scored 7 2nd half points, and only 2 points in the third quarter.

The first half belonged to VJ King who put together one of his best offensive halves of his season.  King was unstoppable, scoring in every way, but getting most of his buckets around the rim, in transition. King went for 21 in the first half and finished the game with 26 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.

Aaron Thompson played another terrific well-rounded game, especially on the defensive end.  Thompson finished with 5 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks.

Frank Howard finished with eight points and he hasn’t missed a free throw in four games and counting now. Junior Corey Manigault finished with 8 points and 10 boards.

O’Connell didn’t put any players in double figures. Randall Gaskins scored 7 and Dominic Fragala scored 6 to lead DJO.
