In Round 1 Gonzaga Gives DeMatha a Scare but Stags Overcome

in what was to be the first of two match-ups in a three day span between DeMatha and Gonzaga the Eagles gave DeMatha and their perfect WCAC record quite a test before Nate Darling was able to hit the winning jump shot with 41 seconds to go.

Gonzaga got 21 from Sam Miller, 15 from Chris Lykes, and 13 and some beautiful assists from Bryant Crawford.  Gonzaga would go up as much as eight points in the second half but every time Gonzaga would look to take control DeMatha would strike back.

DeMatha got major contributions from Markelle Fultz and DJ Harvey, who scored 25 and 22 respectively. Fultz was attacking the rim constantly from different angles, and it paid off.  Gonzaga didn’t have anyone who could stay in front of him, and his penetration was very effective.

Gonzaga shot only six free throws in the game. DeMatha’s Thomas Bruce got lost on a crowded DeMatha bench on Monday, but look for Mike Jones to get him back into the rotation on Wednesday.

Wednesday‘s rematch will be in Hyattsville on the DeMatha campus at 7:30 PM.
