DeMatha and Paul VI to Meet in 2014 WCAC Championship

For the third time in 17 days DeMatha and Paul VI will meet, this time for all the marbles.

Entering the WCAC playoffs a lot of teams had aspirations to take home the hardware.  But a crazy quarter-final day left only two of the top four seeds remaining;  DeMatha and Paul VI. And with upsets running rampant it was no guarantee that these rivals would get an opportunity to play a rubber match.

But on Sunday evening the favorites came focused, and ran away with convincing victories.  Paul VI beat McNamara 67-41 in the first semifinal and DeMatha beat Ireton 70-36 in the nightcap.

On February 9th Paul VI beat the Stags in Hyattsville by a score of 55-48.  Eight days later DeMatha returned the favor on Paul VI’s home turf, a 54-52 thriller.

In DeMatha’s run away victory in the semi-final’s all 17 players got an opportunity to play, and 12 found themselves in the scoring log.  Like they usually do, the Stags had a very balanced attack. Terrell Allen and seldom used junior Ahmad Clark tied for a team lead with 11 points each.  All of Clark’s points came in the finals five minutes of the game where he just couldn’t miss. Patrick Moseh had a game high 14 for Ireton.

Paul VI got off to a monster start in the first semi-final as they outscored McNamara 20-2 in the first quarter.  From that point they never looked back.  Junior Point guard Kevin Dorsey led the way with a semi-final high 18 points.

Everything now comes down to Tuesday night at 8PM at American University where the #2 seed DeMatha and #4 seed Paul VI will play for the championship.  Expect a defensive, low scoring game, where every possession counts.  It should be a good one.
