DeMatha Looks Very Strong In Early Season Trouncing of Eleanor Roosevelt

DeMatha looked to be in mid-season form on Thursday night as they improved to 2-0 over defending Maryland 4A State champs Eleanor Roosevelt in Hyattsville, MD.

Roosevelt, who lost almost every player in their rotation from last year’s incredible season looked overmatched, especially down on the block.  Perhaps the most noteworthy player was DeMatha freshman DJ Harvey.  Harvey a 6’6″ freshman had a handful of rim rattling dunks, took one ball coast to coast and was just a menace inside.  He’s got quite a future a head of him and he’s at quite the school to let that future play out.  Fellow stag forward Joe Hampton looked dominant as well.

The Stags put three players in double figures but saw nine players score between five and 10 points.  DeMatha’s back court was strong as well, but once they get into league play they will really get tested.  Their front court should be able to hang with the best of them.

On the other side of the ball, it’s tough to ridicule Roosevelt.  Practice for public schools just started 20 days ago and being that they have virtually no rotation players returning it’s going to be a process, but if your a betting a man I think its safe to bet that Roosevelt will be right there in the thick of it once February and March come around.  Roosevelt did have one very bright spot.  Senior guard Andre Fox had a game high 20 points including three triples and is poised to lead Rose this year.

Up next for the Stags is another PG county showdown as they play DuVal on Saturday night at 8PM.  Then they will be back at home to face their third public school in a row and try to avenge their loss last year that came against then defending Maryland 4A state champs Magruder.  Like Roosevelt Magruder is very young this year and many people aren’t giving Magruder much of a chance versus DeMatha.  But this is why they play the games.

Roosevelt will host Suitland next Tuesday at 7:15 in their home opener.
