Stephan Jiggetts hits Game Winning 3 to Give McNamara an Upset Win Over DeMatha at Showplace Arena

Stephan Jiggetts and his McNamra team never led on Tuesday night.  Never led until the senior combo guard came off a screen and had a wide open look from beyond the arc with eight  seconds remaining.

Jiggetts squared up to the basket, caught and released.  The shot was good and it put host McNamara up one.  DeMatha was finally granted a timeout with just under six seconds to go.  DeMatha’s Jairus Lyles would get a decent look, an off balance runner that hit the backboard and was off target and the McNamara faithful stormed the court in celebration of Jiggett’s big shot.

DeMatha was in total control for almost the entire game.  At half-time they held a 30-18 lead.  McNamara came back to cut the lead to two with six minutes to play in the fourth but DeMatha then stretched the lead back out to six and the lead stood there with 1:39 in the game..  But in the waning seconds Jaelin Grant missed two free throws with DeMatha up two and twenty one seconds remaining which left the door ajar for Jiggetts and company.

The game brought back memories of a February 8th, 2011 game between these same schoools at this same location.  In that game DeMatha guard James Robinson inbounded the ball from half court and after the ball got deflected into the hands of teammate Marcellous Bell, he flipped in a lay-up to give the Stags a two point victory.  Click here to watch Bell’s buzzer beater in 2011.

On Thursday night DeMatha will be back in action as they play arch-rival Gonzaga at Galludet at 7:30PM.  McNamara, who improved to 10-8 with the win will host Carroll on Friday night.
