DeMatha Escapes North Point Despite Late Collapse

It’s been a rough year to date for Mike Jones and his DeMatha Stags.  They return two starters and only three rotation players.  Coming in to Saturday the Stags were 1-3.

On Saturday night in the nightcap of a 6 game slate in the DMV Tip-Off Classic at Wise High School redemption was on the mind of the Stags who lost convincingly in the BSN Elite Summer League Championship to North Point.

DeMatha got out to a quick start and stretched the lead out to double figures for much of the second half but North Point mounted a monumental comeback, cutting the lead to one in the waning minutes.  North point got an open look on a 3-ball to tie with just a couple seconds left but the shot didn’t fall and DeMatha improved their record to 2-3 as the WCAC schedule is set to begin.  DeMatha’s only previous win was in their WCAC opener against a struggling Carroll team.

Jairus Lyles was named MVP for the Stags as he scored all of his 16 points in the second half.  Lyles finished with three 3-pointers.

Up next for the Stags is a trip to St. Mary’s Ryken on Friday evening.
