T Roosevelt Outlasts Spingarn to Advance to DCIAA Championship

Theodore Roosevelt is used to the big stage.  Last year they won the DCIAA and came ever so close to pulling a monumental upset over DeMatha in the Abe Polin City Title Game.

This year Roosevelt entered the DCIAA playoffs as the #2 seed in the west bracket of the tournament.  There were multiple teams who were favored over the Rough Riders to win the DCIAA.  One of those teams was Spingarn.  Spingarn entered the tournament with a #1 seeding and the two teams would square off in the night cap of Thursday’s quadruple header with a birth to the DCIAA championship game on the line.

Spingarn entered the DCIAA playoffs undefeated in league play at 14-0 but Thursday night would belong to T Roosevelt who won a high scoring affair 85-76 over the Green Wave.  Roosevelt used a box and one defense for the entire game.  The defense was aimed at stopping Spingarn’s sophomore stand out Jerome West.  They were effective in stopping West, but Green Wave senior Rockwell Lee-Vaughn exploded for a career high 37 points including five 3-point field goals.  West was limited to just 11 points, his second lowest point totals in Spingarn’s 30 games this season.  West showed incredible poise through his frustrations and will be one of the more dominant players the DCIAA has seen in the last decade once it’s all said and done.

Roosevelt had seven players score at least six points and put four players in double figures.  They were led by point guard Rontrez Purcell who scored all of his season high 22 points in the second half.  Purcell was dominant after the halftime break hitting eight field goals and going 3-4 from the line in the 16 minute span.  He hit three third quarter 3-pointers to break a tie at half time and put Roosevelt in the drivers seat.

Kavon Glover would score 17 points for the Rough Riders before fouling out.  His second half minutes were very limited because of foul trouble.  Roosevelt’s size was a major factor in this game.  6’9” Brian Bridgeforth played a tremendous game, going for a double-double and converting a few monster dunks.  6’7” Ibrahim Diate was a menace inside as well.  The tandem will match up very well with Coolidge’s big front line.  Roosevelt will face Coolidge on Saturday at 6pm at Coolidge with a DCIAA championship on the line and a birth to the 2012 Abe Polin City Title game which is scheduled for Monday, March 12th at 7pm.  The location is still up in the air.
