#15 DuVal Holds Off Suitland in PG County Battle
Suitland’s Roddy Peters is one of the most prolific scorers in the DMV yet somehow stays under-the-radar.
A strong showing against DuVal might have been what he needed for his coming out party, but DuVal’s balanced attack and 26 point outburst by Kevin Kuteyi stole the show. The DuVal Tigers, ranked #21 in the area, held off the the Suitland Rams and left a packed Suitland gym with a victory and fans of the Rams wondering what went wrong.
Peters was fouled in the fourth quarter on a three point attempt and went to the line with a chance to tie the game at 67 with 22 seconds left. The passing and aggressive transition play of Peters kept the Rams within striking distance and now he could tie the game with three free throws. First one missed, second one missed, and third shot was off as well. Instead of sulking, Peters hurriedly entered the paint, grabbed the offensive board and attempted to tie it up again by dribbling to the sideline and getting a great look at a three that fell just short. Suitland then fouled DuVal in desperation with only a few seconds remaining. One free throw iced the game and the eleventh victory for DuVal.
Peters ended up with 15 points and seven dimes. The two Daquans–Doyle and Page–each had 12 points for the Rams, as well as three majestic three pointers by Arvel Atwater. The victorious Tigers had a quartet of double digit scorers with Kuteyi’s 26, Charles Ekanyanwu’s 14, a dozen from Daniel Ijeh, and 10 from Tyrus Jones. Look for Suitland to gel and do bigger things later in the year with their strong big men.
