Coolidge Tops Wilson Behind Mormon’s 27; Advances to DCIAA Title Game

On paper, Coolidge is one of the top teams in the DMV, public or private.  They pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year by handing Montrose Christian only their second loss in two years. A few weeks later they took down local powerhouse Riverdale Baptist. They are starting to show that they are much more than paper champs.

They have three sure fire D-1 players, possibly more.  They have a huge front line.  They have shooters, slashers, and play great defense.  Their coach is one of the best in the business.  However, they always seem to fall apart come DCIAA playoff time.  This year, they are hoping to put an end to that playoff losing chatter and win a birth to the Abe Polin City Title game where many people think they have the fire power to potentially win the city title game.

On Thursday evening De'Shaun Mormon continued his incredible season scoring a game high 27 points including five triples.  Mormon is making a strong case to be a first team all-met selection.  The scary news is that he is only a junior and has the potential to be in the same discussion as the Nate Britt's, Kris Jenkins', BeeJay Anya's and Aquille Carr's of the world next year.  Mormon's sidekick, Central Connecticut State bound Khalen Cumberlander had another big game too, scoring 19 points. Delaware commit Maurice Jeffers was two points shy of another double-double.  Power forward Jade Dade added twelve for the Colts.

Wilson was led by senior guard Dimitri Gaither who continued his stellar season with 18 on the night. The 18 point performance snaps his streak of six games with at least 20 points.  Wilson began the game hanging right there with the heavily favored Colts.  Wilson led 19-16 after the first quarter.  Coolidge would outscore Wilson 22-14 in the second quarter and wouldn't look back from that point.  Wilson kept the game close, but there was never a question of who the better team was.

Coolidge advances to the DCIAA championship game Saturday evening at 6pm vs defending DCIAA champion Theodore Roosevelt.  Wilson will play Spingarn in the 3rd place game Saturday afternoon.
