Epps and Owens Lead #9 Magruder Over #19 Springbrook
In what most consider the biggest rivalry Montgomery County has seen in decades Magruder showed why Springbrook’s run is over and Magruder’s is just beginning.
Magruder’s 5’4” electric point guard JJ Epps had been sidelined with a shoulder injury he suffered last week versus Whitman and his status coming into tonight’s game was unknown. The feisty junior suited up and proved to be the difference as he scored 9 of his season high 13 points in the second half to lead the Colonels to a 59-50 victory before a sold out crowd of approximately 1400. On a night when Magruder’s leading scorer Nick Griffin went just 3-14 from the field someone else needed to step up. Along with Epps, Magruder’s Garland Owens showed up in a big way as he scored 18 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, blocked 3 shots, and had 3 monster dunks that got both his team and the crowd going. Springbrook superstar Demetric Austin was held in check scoring just 13 points but he did grab a game high 20 rebounds.
For the first time in years the two teams will only meet once during the regular season as Springbrook has been moved out of the 4A west region. Although they are both playing in the same Christmas tournament it is reported that their is no possibility that they can meet again. Should they meet again this year it would be at the Comcast Center. Springbrook has a long way to go to reach that goal though, as they will have to battle it out with all of the PG County schools for that right. Magruder on the other hand seems to have a golden path to win the 4A west as no Montgomery county teams should have any chance to dethrone the Colonels. If it weren’t for Magruder’s season opening loss to DeMatha a perfect regular season could be a serious possibility.
Up next for Magruder are two tough contests in the first annual Montgomery County vs PG County Christmas tournament. The Colonels are scheduled to play against #14 Eleanor Roosevelt and #25 Gwynn Park on December 27th and 28th. Springbrook will also face Gwynn Park in the same tournament.
