Gonzaga Survives Late Scare, Wins Gonzaga DC Classic
Neumann-Gorreti scored the first basket in the Gonzaga DC Classic on Sunday night and that was the only lead they would have throughout the entire game. They did make a late charge and cut the deficit to 1 in the final seconds but Gonzaga held on for a 4 point victory.
It was the sixth consecutive year that host Gonzaga won the annual tournament. Nate Britt picked up his fourth foul late in the third quarter which forced him to sit extended minutes on the bench. Neumann-Gorreti trailed for the entire game but late in the fourth quarter they made a valiant comeback. Gonzaga was able to nail their free throws down the stretch and a Neumann-Gorreti three pointer with less then 5 seconds left came up short and Gonzaga took home the hardware.
Gonzaga was led by Kris Jenkins who scored 20 points and Nate Britt who chipped in 12. It was the first game in the tournament in which Britt did not lead the Eagles in scoring. Neumann-Gorreti was led by Ja’Quan Newton’s 15 points and La’Quan Coaxum’s 11.
