Paul VI Downs DeMatha in Battle of WCAC Heavyweights
In the WCAC it’s come down to a four team race for the regular season crown. And two of those four squared off on Sunday afternoon in Hyattsville, Maryland. Paul VI (20-4, 11-3) ventured up to Maryland to play DeMatha (21-2, 11-2) in front of a packed house.
The game was a back and forth affair that saw numerous lead changes. Marcus Derrickson and Kevin Dorsey led all scorers with 15 each. But it was Paul VI’s Joshua Reaves who hit the biggest shot of the game, a 3 pointer with the shot clock winding down and 54 seconds on the clock, that stretched the Panthers lead from one to four that sealed it for the Fairfax club. On the ensuing possession DeMatha’s Corey Henson was whistled for a very questionable offensive foul and from that point on a free throw and a break away layup sealed it for PVI.
DeMatha had a very balanced attack, as nine players scored between two and eight points. They got a huge spark off their bench from 6’2″ sophomore Reginald Gardner who tied Joe Hampton with a team high, eight points.
DeMatha has another tough game on Tuesday as they play at O’Connell. Paul VI plays at McNamara Tuesday.
The rematch of this game is just eight days away, Monday, February 17th at Paul VI.
