Maret Slows Down a White-Hot St. Andrews
St. Andrews entered play on Friday night with a 12-1 record, and ranked in the Washington Post. Maret was ranked ahead of St. Andrew’s despite an 11-5 record, but they were able to defeat the only team that had beaten St. Andrew’s; Saint James.
Maret has played an incredibly tough schedule this year playing the likes of McNamara, National Christian, St. Stephens/St. Agnes, John Carroll (Baltimore), Theodore Roosevelt, and Clinton Christian just to name a few.
Maret looked battle-tested on Friday night and played very well as a team, scoring from inside and out, in the half court and transition. St. Andrew’s on the other side is dominated by their back-court and could really use some help in the front court. St. Andrew’s backcourt (McFadden and Atkinson) scored 27 of the teams first 29 points. By that point the game was all but over. But take nothing away from what Kevin Jones has done with the private school in Potomac. His team has room to grow, and if they can integrate some of their big men into the offense they will be even more dangerous.
On Friday, Maret had four players in double figures; Drake Goddard led with 20, Steffen Davis added 19 including four triples, Jalen Barnes added 15 to go along with nine rebounds, and Austin Vereen added 13. St. Andrew’s was led by McFadden and Adkinson who scored 21 and 14 respectively.
