#2 seed Churchill Defeats #10 seed Clarksburg in 4A West Quarterfinals
There were tons of regional quarterfinal games all across the state of Maryland on Thursday night.
For many teams such as the Churchill Bulldogs it was their first post season game after receiving a first round bye. Other teams, such as Clarksburg were in their second playoff game.
Clarksburg was one of the trickiest teams to figure out in the 4A. Would the team that stunned Magruder show up? Or would we see the Coyote team that lost to Damascus during the regular season. The answer, as expected, would be somewhere in the middle. Churchill certainly came out ready to play in their 2013 post season debut. Churchill’s combination of senior leadership, and talented youth makes them one of the top contenders to give Magruder a run for their money.
Sophomore Jesse Locke led the Bulldogs on Thursday with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Seniors Malik Harris, Dominique Williams, and Bryant Wheatley would all score in double figures, going for 14,13, and 11 respectively. The bulldogs dominated the game down on the blocks, going to the line 28 times as opposed to Clarkburgs 13 free throw attempts.
The loan bright spot for Clarksburg was guard Dennis Singleton Jr. who scored eight points above his season average. The junior went for 20 points including four triples. Clarkburg’s leading scorer Josh Hardy didn’t have his greatest game. He picked up two fouls in the first eighty seconds of the game. In the third quarter he committed what looked like two frustration fouls 40+ feet away from the court, and the Coyotes were in trouble. Luckily, he would play through the foul trouble and wouldn’t pick up his fifth until there was less then a minute left in the game.
With the victory Churchill advances to play Quince Orchard, the #3 seed who defeated the # 11 seed Whitman 46-31 on Thursday. That game will be at Churchill on Tuesday, March 5th at 7pm. In the regular season Quince handed Churchill an 18 point loss at Churchill’s place so you know redemption will be on the mind of the Bulldogs. On the other side of the 4A West bracket Kennedy will be playing at #1 seed and defending Maryland 4A state champs Magruder. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Churchill, QO game.
