Riverdale Baptist Claims inagural Capital Beltway Championship by Defeating Princeton Day 95-89

Nigel Johnson was on fire Tuesday night in Upper Marlrboro.  But it seemed like Aquille Carr and Jerron Martin had an answer for everything Johnson did.

The supporting casts had big games too.  There was big play after big play and the capacity crowd at Riverdale Baptist definitely got their money worth.

Riverdale got out to the hot start, as they led from the first bucket until the 5:25 mark of the third quarter when Aquille Carr banged a triple to give PDA their first lead.  For the next quarter it was back and forth, both teams were going at it.

With about two minutes to go Riverdale pulled away and made all of their free throws down the stretch.

Nigel Johnson was named tournament MVP with 33 points. Anton Waters, Aquille Carr, and Jerron Martin of PDA were also selected to the all tournament team.  Chinanu Onuaku joined Johnson from Riverdale on the all tourney team.

Aquille Carr led PDA with 26 points.  Jerron Martin added 24.  The combo teamed up for nine 3-balls on the night.  Riverdale connected for a dozen 3’s on the evening. Emmanuel Omogbo had 15 points and a few monster blocks. Anton Waters double-doubled, going for 14 and 10.

Riverdale put four players in double figures.  Along with Johnson’s 33 Chinanu Onuaku went for 20 and 10 and Robert Tyler and Khary Doby went for 15 and 11 respectively.

With the win Riverdale becomes both regular season and post season champs of the first season in the Capital Beltway League.
