Montrose Christian Loses in ESPN’s NHSI Tournament semi-finals
Montrose Christian, the defending NHSI champions ran into a road block on Friday afternoon which ended their season and quest to win back-to-back NHSI championships.
Montverde Academy of Montverde, Florida put together a tremendous game to defeat the #2 seed Mustangs. Montverde led for almost the entire game and held a 41-29 lead after three quarters. But Montrose put together a phenominal comeback, eventually taking a lead late in the game. Montverde’s Kasey Hill, a junior who is commited to Florida capped off his phenomenal game with some clutch buckets. Hill finihed the game with 20 points and seven assists.
Montrose was led by senior Michael Carrera who played a phenominal game in his last as a Mustang. Carrera finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out. He showed why he is pound for pound, one of the best rebounders in the nation. He gave Montrose many second chance opportunities. He finished with seven offensive rebounds. As a team Montrose outrebounded Montverde 46-23 despite losing.
Justin Anderson struggled offensively, finishing with three points on 1-14 shooting. Anderson got a decent look on a 3-ball with about 10 seconds remaining and Montrose trailing by two. Anderson then put up a shot from mid-court with Montrose down three at the buzzer that just rimmed out. Anderson’s phenomenal career did not end the way he wanted it to, but he will be remembered for all of things he did so well for Montrose over the years, not Friday’s offensive performance.
Montverde will face #1 seed Findlay Prep who downed St. Benedicts 68-55 in the second semi-final game. Findlay Prep again showed why they are the class of the tournament putting four players in double figures. They were led by senior Winston Shepard’s 17 points and seven rebounds. Shepard is comitted to San Diego State.
